The JNVST is held at the block level and students from Class 5th are eligible to appear for the exam. The exam consists of two papers, Paper I and Paper II, which are conducted on the same day. Paper I is for students who want to be considered for admission to Class 6th and Paper II is for students who want to be considered for admission to Class 9th.

After the counseling process is completed, the selected students are required to report to the allocated NVS school and complete the admission process. The admission process includes the submission of various documents, such as the birth certificate, the mark sheet of the previous class, and the transfer certificate from the previous school. The selected students are also required to pay the fees for the first year of study at the NVS school.
